Episode 77 – Tara Geraghty – Making Cancer Fun

“It’s my life to live. I am OK with the choices I am making for my life. I am accountable.”

Cancer and fun are two words that don’t generally go together, however, my guest today is about to tell us otherwise.

In 2009, after coming out of a domestic violence divorce, Tara Geraghty found herself in the hospital with her 3 ½-year-old daughter Emily, who was diagnosed with stage 4 Neuroblastoma (one of the third most common types of childhood cancer).

Emily was admitted to hospital and critical.

Unable to control anything that was happening is something Tara remembers well. Faced with an unknown outcome of whether her daughter would live or die, she was forced to just be present and appreciate the here and now and that’s how she made the choice to make every moment the best it could be.

From then on there were decorations in Emily’s room, parties and celebrations for anything that Tara could think of and they had a 50th ‘day’ celebration party where they gave out party favours…even the nurses wanted to hang out in Emily’s room.

Before cancer, Tara spent her whole life feeling like she had to have it all together. Sitting on the floor of Emily’s hospital room she finally released the pressure to be perfect. Her perspective on everything changed. She felt the pull toward being more open, authentic and transparent and as she says when you’re in faced with life or death and all control you thought you had is stripped away, the only thing that is left is the real you.

In this episode Tara shares:

  • If every single human being on the planet wrote down what they were grateful for every night, it would change the entire world for good.
  • Everything we view in our world, the good the bad the ugly; it’s up to you as to how we view it.
  • You don’t need other people’s approval. Trust your gut…your inner wisdom. Our inner wisdom is so powerful…listen more.
